On July 25, 2005, he was filming a Big Brother promotional clip in a Cairns, Queensland nightclub. Deering and an unnamed 22-year-old woman were detained outside the club and charged with causing public distress by performing an indecent act in public.
He stated he had just gone outside to potty. In September 2005, he was freed on A$100 bond and eventually pled guilty to three offences and was fined A$1,000.
