Janne Henrik Niinimaa is a retired professional ice hockey player from Finland. He spent ten seasons in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Dallas Stars, and Montreal Canadiens.
He played in Finland’s SM-liiga, Sweden’s Elitserien, Switzerland’s National League A, and Sweden’s Allsvenskan.
Niinimaa has represented Finland at the Winter Olympics twice, winning a bronze medal in 1998 and being a national team member when Finland earned its first World Championship gold medal.
Despite these honors, Ninimaa is likely best remembered for Darren McCarty’s deke around him, which resulted in a goal in Game 4 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, in which McCarty’s Detroit Red Wings swept the Flyers.
Niinimaa recorded a goal and eight assists in 13 games for Philadelphia, while McGillis scored a goal and five assists. Beckett never played in the NHL.
In addition, Niinimaa represented Finland in the Olympics during the latter half of the 1998 NHL season.
Niinimaa recorded three assists in six games as Finland won bronze. Niinimaa announced his retirement on February 10, 2014.
