She is the daughter of Ben and Hayat Nesheiwat, both of whom are immigrants. Her parents were of Jordanian Christian descent.

Hayat moved to New York at the age of four. Janette was raised in a family of three sisters and one brother. Janette was nearly 13 years old when her father was killed in an accident. Hayat, her mother, has raised the entire family on her own since then. She has an older sister named Julia, a younger brother and sister named Daniel and Jaclyn, and a younger sister named Dina. Jenette finished her US Army ROTC Advanced Officer Training at Ft. Lewis, Washington, before becoming a family and emergency physician.
