Hanne, a cosmetics artist, met Idris Elba, her future husband, in England. She worked as a make-up artist during that time and eventually began dating. They relocated to New York in order to further their careers. In June 1999, they married in front of their loved ones in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, United Kingdom. Isan Elba, their daughter, was born after nearly three years of waiting. After four years together, they announced their breakup in 2003 after a year together. However, neither party has revealed the reason for their split. Despite their breakup, they remained friends. In 2013, they were photographed celebrating their daughter Isan’s 16th birthday celebration.
