June- the pride month! Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, faced criticism for his response to the backlash over Dylan Mulvaney’s Bud Light advertisement.
Rumours emerged that Anheuser-Busch had lost its LGBTQ+ rating due to caving to the backlash, and now by some people, the CEO himself is being called gay.
While Whitworth being gay is not valid, and only the hate he has been receiving, his statement was widely condemned as inadequate and lacking substance.
Rather than strongly supporting LGBTQ+ rights and marginalized communities, he praised the company’s employment record and avoided divisive discussions.
The Human Rights Campaign suspended Anheuser-Busch’s Corporate Equality Index score in a letter dated May 9.
The campaign addressed the company’s lack of support for the LGBTQ+ community in response to the bigoted backlash.
The controversy intensified when conservatives spread conspiracy theories about the CEO’s past employment with the CIA.
They speculated that the government had orchestrated Whitworth’s placement in the company to promote a “woke” agenda.
