Howie had surgery in November of 1986. On Sunday night, he was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a bruise caused by pooling blood in his muscles.
The bruise directly above his left knee had been drained. He was supposed to be discharged the next day, and he was about to play a game after a few days in San Diego. The doctor estimated that he would be out of commission for 7 to 10 days. They had to cut the skin, which took them about 15-20 minutes, and he needed three sutures.
