Almost a decade ago, Shane Battier, one of the NBA’s most talented players, was said to be running for US Senate. According to Zach Lowe’s Grantland post in 2014, Shane Battier stated that the Michigan Democratic Party had approached him to see if he would consider running for US Senate. Furthermore, the offer was to succeed the legendary US Senator Carl Levin.
He announced his retirement in 2013. Then, some sites mentioned Battier as a probable contender. However, the two-time NBA champion declined and chose not to run for office. Although the news of Shane Battier’s rejection of an invitation to run for government was significant at the time, many Democratic Party members believe no such offer was ever extended.
According to Josh Pugh, Communications Director of the Michigan Democratic Party, Battier was not even considered as a candidate. On top of all that, he said, “Like many fans of basketball and politics, we at the Michigan Democratic Party were surprised to hear Shane Battier mentioned for the first time this afternoon as a possible candidate for US Senate.” The matter sparked debate because many people believed such an offer was conceivable, albeit improbable.
