Following the 1947 Partition of India, a Punjabi Muslim family from Bombay moved to Karachi, where Fatah was born on November 20, 1949.
Fatah began his career as a Journalist for the Karachi Sun after graduating from the University of Karachi with a degree in biochemistry. He later worked as an investigative Journalist for Pakistan Television.
He was twice detained by military administrations while leading communist student protests in the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1977, the Zia-ul Haq administration charged him with sedition and barred him from practicing journalism. He moved from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia, then in 1987, immigrated to Canada.
According to Fatah, he is:
He immigrated to Canada with a Muslim mindset rooted in a Marxist youth. He was an Indian born in Pakistan and a Punjabi born in Islam.
He is one of Salman Rushdie’s several “Midnight’s Children,” who were uprooted from the heart of a great civilization and rendered into indefinite refugees before being misled by an oasis.
