In 1970, after roughly eight years of marriage, Jerome and Judith divorced. Although neither party disclosed the precise cause of their divorce, Halle, their daughter, believes that Jerome’s aggressive behavior toward his wife was to blame.
According to the actress who won an award,
“I witnessed my mother being beaten, but I was unable to assist.” My father was a dictator who attacked her for no apparent reason. I felt the effects on our family since I have been through what these mothers have.”
In addition, Halle disclosed in an interview with host James Lipton that her late father had never harmed her, but had repeatedly battered her older sister. She declared,
The most challenging aspect for me was that he never abused me. After witnessing my sister’s gruesome beatings, I was overcome with regret.
Halle continued,
I felt helpless and like a coward since I was unable to take action. I spent many of my formative years attempting to comprehend, recuperate, and restore my self-esteem.”
Berry revealed in 1992 without guilt that her father had been gone from her life since his separation from her mother. She stated, “I haven’t heard from him since then.” In addition, the celebrity stated,
Perhaps he is no longer living.
Their mother raised Halle and her older sister Heidi as a loving single mom after their parents’ divorce.
Although Halle and her father were unable to reconcile prior to his passing, it appears that the actress now appreciates paternal affection. On Father’s Day in June 2019, Halle shared a rare photograph of her father along with a lengthy, heartfelt statement. She wrote,
“My heart is full of love for my DAD on Father’s Day!” This is one of the only two images I have of him, and it has become a part of the family legend! While I didn’t have much of a relationship with him while he was here due to his alcoholism, which prevented us from having the relationship we were meant to have, I now realize how much he loved me and how important he was and remains to me.
