Roddy had already achieved recognition for his villainous portrayal in NWA Hollywood Wrestling by the late ’75s. Roderick would further build his Rowdy persona in following years. He provoked riots, insulted Mexican communities, and engaged in heavyweight competition.
Piper arrived in the arena as The Masked Canadian after losing a territorial match. He maintained this façade for several months before Hector Guerrero, a wrestler, revealed him.
Roddy traveled to the Mid-Atlantic region in the early 1980s. In addition to competing, Piper worked as a commentator for Georgia Championship Wrestling. Despite playing a villain, he quickly won over the crowd in the arena.
