According to her stepmother, Melissa Guse, Karlie had smoked marijuana with her boyfriend and another friend the night before she disappeared.
She said that Karlie became paranoid and scared after getting high and called her to pick her up. Melissa said that she spent the night comforting Karlie, who was acting erratically and feared for her life.
She said that Karlie slept next to her and was still there when she woke up around 5:30 a.m. However, when she checked on her again around 7:30 a.m., Karlie was gone.
A neighbor, Eddy, reported seeing Karlie walking away from her home around 6 a.m., holding a piece of paper in her hand.
He said that he thought it was strange that she was not wearing any warm clothing on the chilly morning.
He said that he later learned from Melissa that Karlie was missing and tried to follow her on his motorcycle, but could not find her.
No other witnesses have come forward to confirm seeing Karlie that day or since then.
