Her younger sister, Joyce, and she were raised by a single mother who immigrated to Canada from Taiwan. Her father emigrated from Shanghai, China, to Canada. She enjoyed reenacting Cinderella when she was five years old, and as soon as she could write, she began to write and draw books on scrap paper.
