Gretchen Cryer and Donald David Cryer welcomed Jonathan Niven Cryer into the world on April 16, 1965, in New York City, New York. He decided to become an actor when he was 12 years old. Both of his parents were actresses.
He completed his studies at the Bronx High School of Science and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (RADA). As a youth, he went to Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center.
