For eight years, Mark supported Jim Harrick as a coach at UCLA. Furthermore, the Bruins won the NCAA title in 1995 with Gottfried serving as an assistant coach and recruiter. As a result, the Bruins’ 1994 recruiting class was regarded as the best in the nation.

Mark faced his alma mater twice while serving as the head coach of Alabama.
