Early in 2023, Eric Montross—who had previously been in excellent health—was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer.
Although the specifics of his ailment and therapy were kept confidential, Montross communicated his persistent trust in God and his daily struggle with the sickness.
He was inspired by the kids at UNC Children’s Hospital throughout his battle, a cause he had passionately supported with his yearly Father’s Day Basketball Camp.
Those who knew and respected Montross were deeply shocked to learn of his demise.
He was commended for his commitment to his alma institution and community. He was lovingly recalled as a gentle giant with an enormous heart and a strong passion for basketball.
Social media and other platforms were inundated with tributes to Montross from former coaches, players, rivals, coworkers, and fans, highlighting the enduring influence of his achievements on and off the court.
