Earl Russell Madden (1905–1961) and Mary Flaherty Madden (1917–2011), his parents, welcomed John Earl Madden into the world in Austin, Minnesota, in the United States.

When John was a little boy, his father, an auto technician, relocated the Madden family to Daly City, California.

John Robinson, a football coach, and former player, also attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, where they both graduated in 1950. He then attended Jefferson High School, where he eventually graduated in 1954.

While in a Pismo Beach, California bar, he happened to meet Virginia Fields. On December 26, 1959, the two got married and moved to Pleasanton, California.

Joseph and Michael were the couple’s two sons. The Madden lads did what their father had done.

Michael/Mike played football at Harvard University, whilst Joseph/Joe did it at Brown University.

Just two days before his passing, John and Virginia had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

John passed away for an unexplained reason at his Pleasanton, California, home on December 28, 2021. He passed away on April 10, 1985, at the age of 85.
