Club career
Club America Alvarez, 16, enrolled in the club’s development program and began competing for the under-17 squad in 2014. He was promoted to the club’s reserve team the following year while continuing to play for the under-17 squad. Coach Ignacio Ambrz gave Alvarez his first call-up to the American first team in August 2016. He was seen wearing jersey number 282 and sitting on the bench during the team’s week five league game against Monarcas Morelia.
Alvarez made his Liga MX debut on October 29, 2016, in the team’s victory over Santos Laguna, where he placed third in a fan-voted online poll for Man of the Match. On December 25, in the Apertura championship game against Tigres UANL, he scored his first goal as a professional for his team. He received the number 4 jersey before the 2017–18 season began, which had previously belonged to Erik Pimentel.
Ajax
Lvarez joined Dutch club Ajax on July 19, 2019, for an alleged sum of US$17 million. He made his Ajax debut on August 17 during the team’s 4-1 league victory over VVV-Venlo as a 74th-minute substitute.

Youth Career
Alvarez was called up to the Mexico national U-20 team camp to prepare for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He also contributed to Mexico’s World Cup U-20 team’s 3-2 victory over Group B underdog Vanuatu, scoring the game-winning goal.
Senior Career
Alvarez received his first call-up to Mexico’s senior team on January 30, 2017, in time for a friendly match against Iceland. He replaced Jesus Molina in the 60th minute of his team’s match against Iceland on February 8. He was selected on Mexico’s 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad, making him the team’s youngest rooster.
At the age of 19, Alvarez became the youngest Mexican player to score in a Gold Cup competition on July 17 when he scored his first goal for his country against Curaçao in a 2-0 victory. Along with his colleagues Andres Guardado, Hirving Lozano, and Erick Gutierrez, Alvarez was nominated to Mexico’s preliminary 28-man team in May 2018 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He was eventually included to the 23-man roster, it was confirmed on June 4th.
