Bassett lived in Zimbabwe and was a member of the University of Zimbabwe’s medical faculty from 1985 to 2002. In 2002, she was appointed deputy commissioner of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In 2009, she was chosen as a program director for the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, which was centered on the African Health Initiative. She was appointed as New York City’s health commissioner in January 2014. Dr. Mary Bassett assisted the city in responding to Ebola virus cases in the United States, which was one of the most important positions or designations in her career. She also assisted the citizens of New York in dealing with the Legionnaire’s disease outbreak.
