Liasson started off in San Francisco as an independent radio and television reporter. California Edition, a nightly news program on California Public Radio, has her as managing editor and anchor. She worked side by side for The Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, as a print writer.

In the end, she worked as a general assignment reporter and newscaster for National Public Radio starting in 1985. She worked for NPR as its legislative correspondent from 1989 to 1992.
