C-Murder was found guilty in September 2003 of beating and fatally shooting a fan, 16-year-old Steve Thomas, at the Platinum Club, a now-defunct nightclub in Harvey, Louisiana, on January 18, 2002. For inciting a commotion at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Miller was detained early on January 19th. Then, on February 28, 2002, he was charged. Miller was under home arrest while he awaited a new trial. Miller requested to focus on his music career on March 13, 2007, but Sassone rejected his request for a 7:00 a.m. start time. to 9:00 p.m. curfew.
Sassone’s decisions in the case came up during her unsuccessful reelection campaign in 2008. Judge Ellen Kovach overruled Sassone, and the prosecution then resubmitted their motion for Miller to be put back behind bars. Miller was placed under house arrest in January 2009 and was only permitted to leave for a legitimate medical emergency. Miller entered a no contest plea on May 27, 2009, to two counts of attempted second-degree murder. These accusations are related to a 2001 event in Baton Rouge where Miller fired one shot from a semi-automatic pistol at the owner and bouncer of a nightclub who refused to let Miller enter the establishment with the gun before the gun jammed.
