Carrie Coon was born as one of five children to John Coon (father) and Paula Ploenes (mother). She grew up in Copley, Massachusetts, with her four siblings: an elder sister, an older brother, and two younger brothers. She graduated from Copley High School in 1999.
She went on to the University of Mount Union after graduation, earning a B.A. in English and Spanish in 2003. Carrie has been interested in performing since she was a child, and she went on to receive an M.F.A. in acting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
She was then hired by the Madison Repertory Theatre, after which she moved on to the American Players Theatre, where she stayed for four seasons.
