Since boyhood, Al Cowlings and O. J. Simpson have been close friends. They both attended Galileo High School and played football together. They were also teammates with the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills during their professional careers.

Al Cowlings dated Marguerite Whitley, who eventually married Simpson, while they were both in high school. Cowlings and Simpson had troubles shortly after their marriage, but they managed to remain good friends. Al Cowlings was later revealed to be the godfather of Simpson and Whitley’s son, Jason Simpson.

Cowlings was one of the groomsmen at O. J. Simpson’s wedding to Nicole Brown in 1985. Simpson and Brown divorced in 1992 owing to personal differences.

Brown and a friend, Ron Goldman, were found dead in Nicole’s Los Angeles home two years later, on June 13, 1994. Both of them were found dead from stab wounds, according to the police report.

O. J. Simpson was suspected of being involved in Brown’s murder following the incident and was expected to surrender to authorities the day after the funeral, but he didn’t. He was discovered in Cowling’s automobile the next day. Due to a lack of proof, he was later released after posting a $250,000 bail.

Cowlings held a news conference during Simpson’s trial, inviting people to call him on a “900 phone number” to inquire about the murder and trial. He revealed something about the situation at that time. Later, he admitted that Brown’s father mistreated Sydney Brooke Simpson.
