Mansour was charged by Cairo’s criminal court in August 2014 of abusing a lawyer at Tahrir Square in 2011. Mansour denied the charges, and Al Jazeera said they were false.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty in his absence in October. Al Jazeera saw the verdict as unjust and an attempt to restrict journalists. Interpol turned down a warrant application.
On June 20, 2015, at the request of the Egyptian government, Mansour was arrested by German police at Berlin Tegel Airport, provoking protests until he was released.
