Aaliyah Dana Haughton was an American singer, actor, dancer, and model who went by the moniker, Aaliyah. She has been dubbed the “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop” for her role in helping to reshape contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop. Aaliyah died in an airplane accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001, when the heavily overloaded plane she was flying in crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all nine people on board.

Aaliyah’s music has continued to be commercially successful in the decades since her death, thanks to multiple posthumous releases, and she has sold an estimated 24 to 32 million albums worldwide. Three American Music Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, as well as five Grammy Award nominations, have been bestowed to her. She is the tenth most successful female R&B performer of the last 25 years, and the 27th most successful in history, according to Billboard.
